Armenian Genocide Official Statement
April 24th, 2018
It is often the innocent who are the victims of war and the pawns of great powers who play their games of politics. It is the responsibility of those great powers, who are either directly or indirectly involved to secure the protection of those innocents.
The Armenian Students’ Association of NSW thanks the great nation of Australia for their involvement in the protection and security of the Armenian people who fell victim to genocide and the acts of mass atrocity perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire from 1915-1918. These atrocious acts included the following:
-
massacres and death marches
-
drownings and mass burnings
-
concentration camps and gassing
-
forced abortions
-
rape and sexual assaults
-
intravenous poisonings and drug overdoses
-
human experiments
We thank Australia for providing a home to those fleeing Armenians, who had nothing left in this world, except for the clothes on their backs. We thank the efforts of the Australians, for their charitable acts for the Armenian orphans in the Middle East.
We thank the brave ANZAC soldiers who, against the pressures of the Turkish forces, protected the Armenians who sought refuge amongst their Christian counterparts. We thank the ANZAC soldiers for recording their eyewitness accounts of the atrocities that took place and who have today added to the collection of evidence, proving the occurrence of events, to justify the use of the term genocide.
We call upon the Australian Federal Government, to recognise the Armenian Genocide. Not only because it is right and just, but also because it acknowledges the role that Australia played – the role that Australia has always played – in providing a safe haven for those who have escaped the injustices of war and terror.
ASA NSW is a student organisation and is not, in any way, affiliated to any political organisation. However, we do believe in the importance of truth, and all the evidence and accounts of war prove the intention of the Ottoman Empire to destroy the Armenian race.
